The venue was Vale Resort in Wales and the team was the World famous British Lions. David Craig and Neil MacCuish were invited to the first day of the Lions training camp prior to their trip to Oz to take on the World!
All testing went well and the first session in the morning was full of enthusiasm from coaches and players.
There was an obvious team bonding process going on where some players were meeting for the first time.
The first session was very much based on working the ATP-CP system with heavy fast reps for all major body areas in the weights room and sport specific phases of individual play through HIIT in the WRU indoor facility. The Coaches (English and Welsh Rugby S&C coaches) ran the show meticulously ensuring that the techniques and movements were specific whilst achieving the HIIT principles.
Lunch followed and we sat with the Management, Security and Coaching staff. We discussed the sessions and the restrictions to just having the athletes for 8 weeks. Running technique for Rugby was then discussed before Frans Bosch was introduced to us. For those who don't know he is a technical expert in running education and has worked with some of the most successful athletes in the world for over two decades... another great honour!
The players retired to their rooms and or break out area until they were briefed on the rest of the days events. The following session was a technical and tactical session which was to be conducted indoors due to adverse weather for which the players once again performed well.
First impressions were very encouraging and GCC Training definitely took away valuable information for functional specific training in sports, running and specifically working within the required training zones (seeing the theory in practice). Although the phrase 'We are going to pump them up to be warriors' was used, the science and prior preparation was meticulous.
A once in a lifetime event and showing where the aspiration for any trainer/coach has to be. All the GCC Training course material was practically on display during the sessions therefore showing if you work hard enough and base your outcome on science and evidence performance for clients at any level can be improved.
GCC Training would like to wish the British Lions all the best for the tour and hope they come back as Champions!
GCC Training completed a Level 2 Kettlebells course at Crossfit 57 Inverness last weekend. All students (trainers and instructors) passed the course and performed extremely well.
What was very concerning was the lack of confidence that trainers had in initially delivering good technique based on second hand information from other trainers.
Now that has been addressed and all the students are now more than competant at the fundamental exercises and understand how to use the Kettlebells properly.
GCC Trainimg will return to Inverness shortly to deliver further courses.

Minor Injury Clinic
On Friday 22nd March at 20:00 we will be hosting a minor injury clinic at the box. This is highly recommended for any of our members who have any past injuries or present niggles that they feel affect their mobility. Advice will be given on how to best prevent and treat those niggles and also on how to strengthen areas affected by injury.
The clinic will be run by David Craig, managing director of GCC Training. David is An Ex-Military Physical Training Instructor with the RAF. During his time as a PTI he specialized as an Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor (Level 4 Specialist Instructor in Accelerated Rehabilitation). Much of his time as an ERI was spent at Headley Court, the specialist rehabilitation center for injured military personnel. Here he primarily dealt with Lower limb injuries, including hip and groin specialist rehabilitation and running re-education from acute, chronic and post-surgical conditions to full fitness.
As well as serving as a PTI David also has a background in professional and semi-professional football in Scotland, England and Cyprus. He has extensive experience managing and delivering health and fitness courses worldwide and we look forward to hosting him at the box.
On the weekend of the 23/24 March, CrossFit 57 North will be hosting a Kettlebell Level 2 course, again ran by GCC training. Kettlebell training, as everyone is well aware, is extremely popular. They provide a complete, whole body workout and are a staple in almost all functional gyms. There is a wide array of moves and exercises to master and this 2 day course will provide the Fitness Instructor or Personal trainer with another exceptional skill to teach.

Only the end of our second full week and already we have had the media coming in for a peak. I’m sure you will agree that it went very well. Iain did a great job of filming and putting us at ease in front of the camera. Lileen gave a solid, composed interview, and Alasdair (after much panic rehearsing of Gaelic in the morning!) managed to put across the message to the Gaelic community of what CrossFit is, both on BBC Alba and on Radio Nan Gaidheal. No mean feat in any language!! Unfortunately though, after Rob had worked so hard on his kipping pull-ups, they only showed him swinging on the bar. Paddy, who cracked out the tub of brylcreem especially for the occasion, was gutted to find the BBC had wrapped up before he arrived. And I, after a long day on seminar in London followed by rush hour travel from Canary Wharf to Gatwick airport, was less than impressed to finally see at the end of the day, a full on zoom, of my visage! I thought I had stealthy managed to remain hidden behind ‘Curly’ (The aptly given name to our rig)!
But the big shout out goes to all of you who got yourself down that morning to work hard for not only yourself, but for each other at the box. All of you have put in a great effort so far and progress has been great. The main attribute you lot have is enthusiasm, and you have it by the shed load. And already it has proved infectious, as many of the people now coming through the door for taster sessions have been folk intrigued by what you have been doing down in an old garage, throwing weights around and swinging on rings! It already feels like some of you are part of the furniture!
This is what CrossFit has done the world over. From a small garage gym in California, it has pulled people from all backgrounds and abilities into a community that constantly seeks to better themselves through blood, sweat (little bit of puke) and tears. And in just under 4 weeks’ time, CrossFitters from all over will be competing in the qualifiers for the title of the Worlds fittest man or woman at the Reebok CrossFit Games.
Each week, for 5 weeks, a WOD will be posted online as part of the qualifiers. So each Friday night we will look to hold the qualifier workout at the box so you can all come down to try it, RX or scaled, and cheer each other on. You don’t have to register for the Games if you don’t want to, but if you do, check out http://games.crossfit.com/ and register there for $20. A good way to see how you measure up against the best!
Alasdair will be programming the WOD’s this week so expect some ‘wobbling’ and grimacing on Curly and generally just hanging upside down, be it by the wall or on the rings! Squatting mobility will be getting looked at also for those that have tight ankles and hips. Keep an eye out on the fb page for more info.

GCC Training completed a Kettlebells course at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court for some of its Exercise Rehabilitation Instructors and Physiotherapists.
All staff passed the course with flying colours and were able to see the need for Kettlebells within functional rehabilitation programmes for lower limb and spinal patients.
The facilities for training were fantastic and Leigh Withers (tutor) conducted a first class course to a very receptive audience.
GCC will continue to have strong links to the military and help wherever possible with future courses and education.
